Eissa Al-Safran

Professor of Petroleum Engineering

Eissa Al-Safran is a professor of petroleum engineering and former vice dean for research and academic affairs at the College of Engineering and Petroleum at Kuwait University. Al-Safran was a visiting professor at the Nuclear Science and Engineering Department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and a visiting research professor at the Petroleum Engineering (PE) Department at the University of Tulsa (TU). Al-Safran is the founder and director of the Kuwait University Petroleum Production Research Projects and cofounder and associate director of the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology Production and Drilling research consortium. He earned a BS degree (1995), an M.Sc. degree (1999), and a PhD degree (2003) in PE and an M.Sc. degree in mathematics and science education (2003), all from TU. Al-Safran worked as a reservoir engineer, and recently as a production engineering consultant in Kuwait Oil Company. He is the coauthor of the SPE book Applied Multiphase Flow in Pipes and Flow Assurance, and has authored and coauthored more than 85 peer-reviewed journal and conference publications in oil and gas production, multiphase flow in pipes, and flow assurance. Al-Safran is serving on the international technical advisory committee for the BHR Group Multiphase Production Conference series since 2007. He received the SPE 2017 Regional (Middle East) Distinguished Achievement for Petroleum Engineering Faculty Award, the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Science (KFAS) 2016 Scientific Production Award in Engineering Sciences, TU Thomas C. Frick Award for outstanding academic achievements in PE, and other awards. Al-Safran is an SPE Kuwait section board member, SPE KU student chapter faculty advisor, SPE League of Volunteers members, and served in several SPE committees and events. Al-Safran is a member of SPE, ASME, ASA, and ASEE.
